FAQ
Click to ExpandDo I need a permit to drive on the beach?
Yes—an ORV permit is required for beach driving. Purchase online, and print it out (or get the self-certification card at Frank & Fran’s if you don’t have a printer).
Where do I check if ramps are open?
Use the NPS ORV conditions page here for the most current ramp status and closures before heading out.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes, for most anglers 16 and over. Purchase online at GoOutdoorsNorthCarolina.com or at Frank & Fran’s.
Do I need a license to crab?
You do not need a license to use a hand line or a crab trap tied to your property. To set traps in the sound, you’ll need a Commercial Recreational Gear License—available at GoOutdoorsNorthCarolina.com or at Frank & Fran’s.
What's the best bait to use to catch fish on Hatteras Island?
The best bait to use is a loaded question and an even bigger answer. Baits preferred on Hatteras Island range from fresh baits like mullet, shrimp, menhaden (bunker), and spot to a variety of frozen baits like squid, mullet, clams, crab, and even synthetic baits like fish bites or other soft plastics. For us to answer the "Best Bait" question appropriately, we would need to know more specifics. Things like where you plan to fish? In the ocean or on the sound side of the island. What species are you targeting, etc? Come in and let us set you up for what's "tried and true" for when you're here!
