How to Catch Blitzing Bluefish on Hatteras Island

When the bluefish start blitzing on Hatteras Island, everything changes fast. One minute the water looks calm, and the next you see birds diving, bait spraying, and fish tearing through the surface. That is your signal to grab a rod, tie on something shiny, and start casting.

Blitzing blues are aggressive, fast-moving, and built for chaos. They are one of the most exciting fish to target from the surf, pier, or soundside, especially when they are chasing bait close to the beach. The key is being ready before the blitz happens.

How to Spot a Bluefish Blitz

Look for signs of feeding activity. Birds working low over the water, baitfish jumping, slicks on the surface, and sudden splashes are all clues that bluefish may be pushing bait. On Hatteras Island, these blitzes can happen along the beach, around piers, near inlets, and anywhere bait gets trapped in the wash.

When you see the water “boiling,” do not overthink it. Bluefish are reaction feeders. Cast quickly, retrieve fast, and keep your lure moving.

Best Lures for Blitzing Bluefish

When blues are feeding hard, metal lures are hard to beat. They cast far, flash like fleeing bait, and hold up better than soft plastics when bluefish teeth get involved. A good bluefish lure bag should include metal jigs, Got-Cha plugs, spoons, and a few surface lures for when fish are crushing bait on top.

1. Sting Silvers and Glass Minnow Style Lures

Sting Silvers are a staple for Hatteras Island bluefish and Spanish mackerel runs. They cast well, flash hard, and imitate small baitfish perfectly. When the water is clear and pretty, lighter and brighter colors are a great choice. When the water is dirty or churned up, darker colors or high-contrast options can help the lure stand out.

A fast retrieve is usually best. Cast past the feeding fish if possible, reel quickly through the school, and be ready for a hard strike.

2. Got-Cha Plugs

Got-Cha plugs are a classic choice from the pier, surf, bridge, or boat. They work especially well when bluefish are feeding on smaller bait near the surface. Use short rod twitches with a steady retrieve to make the plug dart side to side like a wounded baitfish.

If you are fishing from the pier and blues are busting bait, a Got-Cha plug should be one of the first things you tie on.

3. Diamond Jigs

Diamond jigs are simple, tough, and effective. Their reflective finish gives off the flash that bluefish love, and their weight helps you reach fish that are just outside the bar or moving down the beach. They are a great choice when you need distance or when the wind makes lighter lures tough to throw.

Cast long, reel fast, and keep the jig moving. If fish are deeper, let it sink for a second before starting your retrieve.

4. Surface Lures for Topwater Strikes

When bluefish are blowing up on bait at the surface, larger surface lures can create explosive strikes. MTK GoDeep Bar Breakers and Slob Slammers are strong options when you want a lure that casts well, stays visible, and can handle aggressive fish.

Work them with a steady retrieve, pauses, or short twitches. If fish are actively chasing, speed usually wins.

Best Rod and Reel Setup for Bluefish

For most Hatteras Island bluefish action, a medium heavy spinning setup is a great choice. You want something light enough to cast repeatedly, but strong enough to handle a hard strike, rough surf, and a fish that does not want to quit.  Some of our favorite metal rods are 12' Okuma Longitude, 11' Team Daiwa, 11' Daiwa Emcast, 10'6" Tica, CTS Vapor Trail.

A fast reel helps when blues are chasing bait. Speed matters because a lure that moves too slowly often looks unnatural during a blitz. Keep a rod rigged and ready with a metal lure or Got-Cha plug so you are not scrambling when the fish show up.  Pair those rods up with a Daiwa Saltist 4500, Penn Battle High Speed 4000 or 6000, Spinfisher 5500 Long Cast or a Quantum Strive 5000.

Do You Need Wire Leader for Bluefish?

Bluefish have sharp teeth, so leader choice matters. For lures, many anglers use heavier mono or fluorocarbon leader to keep the action natural. When the bite is heavy or the fish are larger, a short wire leader can save lures and reduce cutoffs.

For bait fishing, pre-tied bluefish rigs are a smart option. Chotty’s Bluefish Rigs and Sea Striker bluefish rigs are available at Frank & Fran's and built for toothy strikes. Add cut bait, cast into the trough or near active water, and let the rig do the work.  Kraken Toad Finger Mullet rigs are available exclusively at Frank & Fran's, just add a frozen finger mullet and send it out and get ready for the strike.

Where to Catch Bluefish on Hatteras Island

Bluefish can show up all along Hatteras Island, but some of the best places to watch include the surf zone, Avon Pier, Cape Point, inlets, and areas where birds and bait are active. Focus on cuts, sloughs, outer bars, and any stretch of beach where bait is being pushed close to shore.

The best advice is simple: follow the life. If you see birds, bait, and breaking fish, get a lure in the water.

Quick Tips for Catching Blitzing Blues

  • Keep a metal lure or Got-Cha plug tied on and ready.
  • Cast beyond the feeding fish and retrieve through the school.
  • Reel fast. Bluefish love speed and flash.
  • Use shiny metals in clear water and darker or high-contrast colors in dirty water.
  • Bring extra lures because bluefish teeth are rough on tackle.
  • Watch the birds. They often find the fish before you do.
  • Handle bluefish carefully and use pliers when removing hooks.
