Don’t Be a Clown—Air Down! Beach Driving Tips for Hatteras Island

We’ve had lots of questions this week about airing down for beach driving here on Hatteras Island. The short answer is simple:

Don’t be a clown—air down!

Lowering your tire pressure before entering the beach makes driving on soft sand easier and greatly reduces your chances of getting stuck.

What Tire Pressure Should You Use on the Beach?

For most vehicles, 18–20 PSI is a good starting point for driving on Hatteras Island beaches.

Airing down creates a wider tire footprint, allowing your tires to float across the sand instead of digging into it. If you enter soft sand with fully inflated highway tires, your vehicle must work harder, and the tires are more likely to spin and bury themselves.

Sand conditions can change from one ramp—or even one stretch of beach—to another. If you begin losing momentum:

• Do not floor the accelerator.

• Avoid spinning your tires.

• Stop before the vehicle digs itself deeper.

• Make sure four-wheel drive is engaged.

• Reduce your tire pressure a little more if necessary and safe for your vehicle.

Always consider your tire size, vehicle weight and manufacturer recommendations. Never lower the pressure so far that you risk separating the tire from the wheel.

Air Down Before You Enter the Ramp

Do not wait until you are already struggling in deep sand. Pull into the parking lot at the ramp and air down before entering the beach access ramp and reduce the pressure in all four tires.  Be courteous and do not block the ramp while airing down.

Can You Stay Aired Down While You’re on Hatteras Island?

Many beach drivers stay aired down while moving between nearby beach access areas rather than repeatedly airing up and down throughout the day.

However, reduced tire pressure changes how your vehicle handles on pavement. Drive cautiously, keep your speed down and avoid extended high-speed driving while aired down. Always follow your vehicle and tire manufacturers’ recommendations.

Before leaving Hatteras Island or returning to normal highway speeds, bring your tires back to the recommended road pressure shown on the placard inside your driver’s door.

• Maintain steady momentum without excessive speed.

• Follow existing tire tracks when conditions allow.
