Bluefish Season

What better time than the fall to fish for those Blues! When you see the water boiling, bait jumping and birds working the water, grab your metal lures and get to slinging! Here are some tips for using the certain lures that you can find in our shop or on our website.

Sting Silver/Glass Minnow

  • The question we always get asked is what is the best color? We the bluefish are blitzing the color does not seem to matter, they will hit anything shiny!
  • When the water is “blue and pretty’, you should use lighter colors for sting silver/glass minnows
  • When the water is murky, you would use darker colors for your sting silver/glass minnows.
  • For the sunny days= you would use bright and reflective sting silver/glass minnows
  • For the overcast/dark days= you would use dull colored sting silver/glass minnows

Sting silver/glass minnows can have a treble hook or single inline hook. When you cast the sting silver/glass minnow out, you sling it as hard as you can and as you reel it in, reel it in fast.

The kind of fish you catch also depends on how fast you reel the sting silver/glass minnow in. As you reel it in, they WILL be chasing it!

Beach Bum Lures

These lures seem “real looking” for the fish. It’s best used for the surf for Blues and Spanish.

The Gunslinger jig is offered in weights of ½, ¾, 1, 1.5, and 2 ounces. The slender design and loop eyelets create full action near the surface, triggering reaction strikes from many predatory species of fish that patrol the surf zone.

Got-cha plugs

Got-cha plugs are used on the pier and off boats for catching Blues and Spanish. It attracts fish the same way that the sting silver/glass minnows do.Got-cha plugs are very durable, simple to use, and the fish absolutely love them! These plugs are mostly good for Spanish and Blues and typically used on the pier. The way you use these lures is a method called the walk-the-dog. It’s when you twitch the lure back and forth, it entices the fish to move towards it.

You first need to choose the lure you want and tie it to the line using a uni-knot. The next thing you need to do is just do a regular cast. Now the last thing you need to do is twitch the rod, and reel it in very slowly. As you move the lure you entice the fish to follow it. Because as you twitch the rod, it mimics the movements of a regular bait fish. Although you need to watch the speed of the lure. Sometimes it could be too fast that the fish will lose interest. However, if you reel it in too slowly, the fish will figure out that it’s not real.
