Akios Surf Reels: Uses, Rod Pairings and Rig Pairings for Outer Banks Fishing
When surf anglers begin looking for greater casting distance, better spool control and the ability to handle heavy bait-and-sinker combinations, Akios is a name that quickly enters the conversation.
Akios conventional reels have become popular with serious beach anglers because they combine free-running spools, adjustable braking systems and strong gearing in compact reels built for long-distance casting. At Frank & Fran’s Bait and Tackle, we carry several Akios models suited to fishing the beaches of Hatteras Island and other demanding surf-fishing destinations.
This guide explains the Akios reels we currently carry, what each reel is best used for, and how to match it with the right surf rod and fishing rig.
Understanding Akios CTM Reels
Many of the Akios reels in our lineup include the designation CTM.
The CT, or cage-tournament, design does not have a levelwind. Removing the levelwind reduces resistance as line leaves the reel, helping experienced conventional casters achieve greater distance. Because the reel does not distribute the line automatically, the angler must guide the line evenly across the spool during the retrieve.
The M refers to magnetic braking. Magnetic braking helps control spool speed during the cast and can reduce the chance of a backlash. Many Akios models combine magnetic braking with centrifugal braking, giving anglers multiple ways to adjust the reel for changing wind, bait weight and casting technique.
These reels are best suited to anglers who already understand conventional casting or who are prepared to spend time learning proper spool control.
Akios 656 CTM Reel Family
Frank & Fran’s currently carries several versions of the Akios 656 CTM platform:
These models share the same basic purpose: controlled, long-distance conventional casting from the beach.
Why Choose an Akios 656 CTM?
The 656 platform offers a useful balance of casting performance, line capacity and fish-fighting power. Depending on the exact model, features include a free-floating spool, externally adjustable magnetic braking, centrifugal braking, brass gearing, carbon drag washers and a power handle.
The 656 CTM GRX, RGX OBX and RGX OTB models list a 5.3:1 gear ratio, approximately 300 yards of 15-pound monofilament capacity, 23 inches of line recovery and 17.5 pounds of maximum drag.
Best Uses
The Akios 656 CTM family is a strong choice for:
-
Red drum fishing from the surf
-
Black drum fishing
-
Striped bass fishing
-
Bluefish on bait
-
Long-distance bait fishing
-
Fishing cuts, bars and deeper water beyond the first breakers
-
Casting heavier sinkers and larger bait presentations
Recommended Rod Pairings
For most Hatteras Island applications, pair a 656 CTM with a 12- to 14-foot conventional surf rod capable of handling the combined weight of your sinker and bait.
Akios Fury FX400
The 13-foot Akios Fury FX400 is the most natural brand-matched pairing. It creates a coordinated Akios casting setup for anglers who want distance while fishing traditional OBX bait rigs.
This combination is well suited to:
-
Red drum
-
Black drum
-
Bluefish
-
Striped bass
-
General heavy-bait surf fishing
Ninja Tackle Bomber
A Ninja Tackle Bomber conventional surf rod is another strong pairing for anglers who want a rod designed around powerful casts, heavy sinkers and large baits. The Bomber and 656 combination is especially appropriate for traditional Hatteras drum fishing.
Tica TC2 or Similar Conventional Surf Rod
A Tica TC2, Penn Battalion or similar 12- to 13-foot conventional rod offers a more accessible pairing for anglers moving into an Akios reel without immediately purchasing a premium custom rod.
CTS or Custom Conventional Surf Rod
Experienced casters can pair a 656 CTM with a CTS-based custom rod, including appropriately rated CTS 1305 or 1306 builds. A properly matched custom rod can provide excellent recovery, casting accuracy and power when throwing large drum baits.
Always select the rod according to the total casting load, not just the sinker. An 8-ounce sinker plus a large piece of mullet places considerably more load on the rod than an 8-ounce sinker by itself.
Recommended Rig Pairings
Red Drum Rig
A 656 CTM paired with a conventional 12- to 14-foot rod and a single-hook drum rig is one of the classic Hatteras Island setups.
Recommended terminal setup:
-
Single-hook drum rig
-
Fresh or frozen mullet
-
Menhaden or other legal cut bait
-
Pyramid or storm sinker selected for the current
-
Proper monofilament shock leader
Use this pairing when targeting large red drum in deeper sloughs, around points or along productive sandbars.
Fish-Finder Rig
A fish-finder rig allows a fish to move with the bait before feeling the full resistance of the sinker. It is useful for red drum, black drum, striped bass and larger bluefish.
Pair it with:
-
Mullet
-
Menhaden
-
Spot
-
Cut bluefish where legal
-
Other durable natural baits
Double-Drop Bottom Rig
Although the 656 is often associated with larger fish, it can also be used with a strong double-drop bottom rig when rough surf, heavy current or long casting distance requires more sinker weight.
This setup can target:
-
Sea mullet
-
Pompano
-
Croaker
-
Spot
-
Puppy drum
-
Black drum
For smaller species, use appropriately sized hooks and smaller pieces of shrimp, Fishbites, bloodworm-style bait or sand fleas.
Bluefish Rig
When bluefish are feeding on cut bait, pair the 656 with a durable bluefish rig or a single-hook rig containing a bite-resistant leader. The reel’s line capacity and strong retrieve make it useful when bluefish are holding beyond the closest bar.
Akios 656 CTM GRX Gunmetal
The Akios 656 CTM GRX Gunmetal is the latest evolution of the 656 CTM platform in the current Frank & Fran’s lineup.
It features a non-levelwind cage, a free-floating tournament spool, centrifugal and magnetic braking, brass gearing, carbon drag washers and an upgraded power handle. The external magnetic-control knob lets the angler adjust spool control as conditions change.
Best For
-
Experienced conventional casters
-
Long-distance red drum fishing

Heavy bait and sinker combinations
-
Anglers who want extensive brake adjustment
-
Tournament-style casting techniques adapted for fishing

Best Rod Pairing
Pair it with the 13-foot Akios Fury FX400, a Ninja Bomber or a properly rated CTS conventional surf rod.
Best Rig Pairing
Use it with a single-hook drum rig, fish-finder rig or heavy-duty bluefish rig. This reel is particularly well suited to casting a substantial bait into deep water while maintaining enough line capacity for a long-running fish.
Akios 656 CTM Fury
The Akios 656 CTM Fury is another version of the proven 656 platform. It uses a free-floating spool and combined centrifugal and magnetic braking to give surf casters control over spool speed.

Anglers moving into a high-performance CT reel
-
Red drum and black drum
-
Bait fishing beyond the breakers
-
Casting in changing wind conditions
Best Rod Pairing
The Akios Fury FX400 is the obvious matched pairing. The reel can also be paired with a 12- to 13-foot conventional rod from Ninja Tackle, Tica, Penn or a custom rod builder.
Best Rig Pairing
Pair it with a Frank & Fran’s drum rig and fresh mullet for red drum. For mixed-species fishing, switch to a double-drop rig with shrimp, sand fleas, bloodworm-style bait or Fishbites.
Akios RGX OBX and RGX OTB
The Akios S-LINE CTM 656 RGX OBX and Akios S-LINE CTM 656 RGX OTB are special-edition versions of the S-LINE 656 platform.
Both are designed around a free-floating spool and dual braking system. The listed specifications include a 5.3:1 gear ratio, 300 yards of 15-pound monofilament capacity and 17.5 pounds of maximum drag.
The OBX edition is an especially fitting choice for anglers who spend their time fishing the beaches of the Outer Banks.
Best For
-
Hatteras Island drum fishing

Experienced conventional anglers

Best Rod Pairing
Pair either model with:
-
Akios Fury FX400
-
Ninja Tackle Bomber
-
Heavy conventional Tica or Penn surf rod
-
CTS-based custom conventional surf rod
Best Rig Pairing
These reels excel with a single-hook red drum rig, fish-finder rig or heavy bluefish rig. They can also fish strong two-hook bottom rigs when distance and sinker weight are more important than having a lightweight setup.
Akios 656 CTM Krave and Kyori
The Akios 656 CTM Krave and Akios 656 CTM Kyori are positioned as high-performance conventional surf reels for long-distance bait fishing.
Both models feature magnetic cast control, strong drag systems, high-capacity spools and saltwater-oriented construction.
Best For
-
Surf and pier fishing
-
Red drum
-
Striped bass
-
Bluefish
-
Bait fishing with heavier terminal tackle

Anglers who already have conventional casting experience
-

Best Rod Pairing
Use a 12- to 13-foot conventional surf rod for most applications. Select a rod with enough power to cast the complete bait-and-sinker payload without overpowering the blank.
Best Rig Pairing
A drum rig or fish-finder rig is the most natural match. For pier or beach fishing with cut bait, a durable bluefish rig is another practical option.
Akios Nitron F-15
The Akios Nitron F-15 is a step toward a faster, more specialized distance-casting reel.
Compared with the standard 656 platform, the Nitron series is aimed at anglers who want rapid line pickup, high spool performance and a reel built around powerful casting.
Best For
-
Advanced surf casters
-
Long-distance bait fishing
-
Quickly recovering line through breaking surf
-
Red drum and striped bass
-
Anglers fishing moving water where rapid line pickup is helpful
Best Rod Pairing
Pair the F-15 with a performance-oriented 13- to 14-foot conventional rod. The Akios Fury FX400 is a practical pairing, while a properly selected CTS custom build can help an experienced caster take greater advantage of the reel’s performance.
Best Rig Pairing
Use the F-15 with aerodynamic single-hook rigs whenever casting distance is the priority. A streamlined drum rig generally casts better than a bulky rig carrying multiple large baits.
Akios Nitron F-16
The Akios Nitron F-16 is the most powerful and specialized Akios reel currently listed at Frank & Fran’s.
It is built around a CNC-machined aircraft-grade aluminum X-Frame tournament cage. The reel has a fast 6.2:1 gear ratio, retrieves approximately 34.4 inches of line per turn and lists a maximum drag of 32 pounds.
The rigid frame and tight spool tolerances are designed to support high-speed casting with lower-diameter line, while the upgraded carbon drag provides additional fish-fighting power.

Best For
-
Serious long-distance surf casting
-
Advanced conventional anglers
-
Fast line recovery
-
Large red drum
-
Striped bass
-
Large bluefish
-
Heavy surf applications
-
Anglers who want the top-performing Akios model in the lineup
Best Rod Pairing
The F-16 should be paired with a high-quality conventional surf rod capable of taking advantage of the reel’s casting potential.
Recommended choices include:
-
Akios Fury FX400
-
Ninja Tackle Bomber
-
CTS 1305 or 1306 custom build with an appropriate reel seat and guide layout
-
Another premium 13- to 14-foot conventional casting rod
The most expensive reel does not automatically create the longest cast. Rod action, guide placement, line diameter, shock-leader knot, sinker style and casting technique all have a major effect on distance.
Best Rig Pairing
For maximum distance, pair the F-16 with a streamlined single-hook drum rig and a securely attached bait. Avoid excessive terminal tackle that creates drag and tumbles during the cast.
It is also well suited to a fish-finder rig for large red drum or striped bass. Although its drag and capacity make it capable of handling powerful fish, the complete rod, line, leader, hook and rig system must be selected for the target species.

Line and Shock-Leader Considerations
Most Akios CT reels are designed to cast efficiently with relatively low-diameter main line. However, a strong shock leader is essential whenever you are casting a heavy sinker.
The shock leader absorbs the force generated during the cast. Without one, the main line may break and send the sinker and rig down the beach at dangerous speed.
Your shock-leader strength and length should be selected according to:
-
Sinker weight
-
Bait size
-
Casting style
-
Main-line diameter
-
Rod length
-
Beach conditions
Inspect the leader, knot and main line frequently for abrasion. Sand, shells, rough structure and repeated casting can weaken line even when the damage is difficult to see.
Conventional Casting Safety
Akios CTM and Nitron reels can produce tremendous spool speed. Before making a full-power cast:
-
Start with more magnetic braking than you think you need.
-
Confirm that the spool has no side-to-side play.
-
Make several controlled practice casts.
-
Reduce braking gradually.
-
Keep your thumb close to the spool.
-
Inspect your shock leader and knot.
-
Make sure the beach is clear before casting.
Casting distance should be developed through smooth technique, not uncontrolled force.
