A Beginner’s Guide to a Solid Conventional Drum Fishing Setup

A Beginner’s Guide to a Solid Conventional Drum Fishing Setup

8th Jan 2026

One of the most common questions we hear in the shop is:
“What’s a good conventional rod and reel setup for someone just getting into drum fishing?”

Drum fishing doesn’t have to be complicated, and you don’t need top-tier gear to be successful. You do need equipment that’s reliable, capable of throwing heavy weight, and built to handle big fish. After years of experience, we’ve landed on a setup that consistently checks all those boxes—without breaking the bank.

Our Recommended Beginner Drum Combo

For anglers new to drum fishing, we recommend pairing a 12' Penn Battalion Heavy Rod with either a Penn Squall 12SD or a Penn Fathom 12SD reel.

This combination offers excellent performance at a price point that makes sense for beginners, while still being tough enough to grow with you as an angler.

Why This Setup Works

The 12' Penn Battalion Heavy Rod is designed for surf fishing and has plenty of backbone. It’s capable of throwing eight and bait—an 8oz sinker paired with a chunk of mullet—which is a common and effective presentation when targeting drum.

The rod loads well, casts smoothly, and can handle the stress of fighting large fish in the surf.

Squall vs. Fathom: What’s the Difference?

Both reels are excellent choices, but there is one key difference:

  • Penn Squall 12SD
Built with a graphite body, making it lighter and more affordable. It’s a great option for anglers who want a dependable reel while keeping costs down.

  • Penn Fathom 12SD
Constructed with an aluminum body, making it stronger and more durable overall. While it’s tougher, that extra strength isn’t strictly necessary for drum fishing.

If you’re mainly targeting drum and want to save a few dollars, the Squall will absolutely get the job done. The Fathom is a great upgrade, but not a requirement.

How We Recommend Rigging It

To keep things simple and effective, we suggest:

This setup provides the casting strength needed for heavy weights and the abrasion resistance required for surf conditions.

Ready to Hit the Beach

We typically keep combos like this rigged and ready in the shop, so you can grab one and head straight to the beach without worrying about setup or compatibility.

If you’re new to drum fishing and want a proven, no-nonsense setup, this is a great place to start. Stop by the shop, ask questions, and we’ll make sure you’re geared up and ready to fish.
