FRANK & FRAN’S HATTERAS STYLE DRUM RIG AKA FISH FINDER RIG
Surf Fishing Rig for Hatteras Drum – The Ultimate OBX Setup
Drum fishing is one of the most exciting challenges on the Outer Banks, and success starts with the right rig. Whether you’re targeting big reds in the surf or black drum closer to shore, using a Hatteras drum rig built for strength, presentation, and reliability will help you land your next trophy fish.
The Proven Drum Rig Setup
The classic Hatteras drum rig is designed to handle heavy surf, strong currents, and powerful fish. It’s a simple, effective bottom rig that keeps your bait in the strike zone while minimizing tangles—perfect for the rough OBX surf.
Choosing the Right Bait
On Hatteras Island, fresh bait is key. Use cut mullet, tuna belly, spot, or bunker for large red drum, and shrimp or clams for black drum. The natural scent and presentation draw in fish feeding along the sandy bottom. Fishbites artificial baits also work well especially for black drum.
Tips for OBX Drum Success
- Fish the Tides: Drum bite best around incoming and outgoing tides.
- Cast Beyond the Breakers: Get your bait where the fish are cruising.
- Stay Ready: Drum often hit hard—keep your drag set and your rod secure.
- Use Quality Gear: Strong rods, sharp hooks, and durable rigs are essential.

One question we often get asked is what is the best surf fishing rig to use for drum fishing. One type of rig we prefer is a drum rig also known as a fish finder rig to catch puppy, yearling and old drum. We have pre-built rigs making it easy for you to try your hand at Hatteras surf fishing for drum. Place a bead on the shock leader, slide the sinker slide onto the shock leader, tie the snelled hook to the shock leader using a uni knot.
- Snelled Circle Hook
- Optional beads - to help protect your knots
- Barrel Swivel
- Sinker Slide with McMahon or Coastlock Snap
- Pyramid Sinker
Add fresh mullet, spot, bunker (menhaden) or tuna belly to the hook. Clip a sinker to the sinker slide. The size of the sinker depends on how rough the surf is when you are fishing. You want to use the least amount of weight possible that keeps your bait in place once casted. There is one exception, if you are fishing in the “conga line” at Cape Point, you will want to go with an 8 oz. sinker so that all anglers are drifting at the same rate.
